چکیده

Free radicals are species with one or more unpaired electrons. The unpaired electron results in a species that is often highly reactive. Free radicals have a wide range of reactions; two broad classes of reactions are electron transfer and addition reactions resulting in covalent bond formation. Free radicals can be classified as reducing (donating an electron to an acceptor) or oxidizing (accepting an electron from a donor). Because of the wide range of reactivities of radicals, there is a thermodynamic hierarchy or pecking order for electron transfer reactions (Buettner, '93). Table 1 is arranged with the most oxidizing radicals at the top and most reducing at the bottom. This pecking order predicts the flow of electrons. This thermodynamic hierarchy helps to predict which species might react with each other. In general, the radical species higher in the pecking order steal electrons from the reduced species lower in the pecking order. The pecking order predicts that peroxyl radicals will react with vitamin E (tocopherol):

Oxidative Stress and Human Disease: a Review

Background: The human body needs both types of oxidants (free radicals) and antioxidants for normal metabolism, signal transduction mechanism, and the order of cellular activity. Free radicals can be either harmful or helpful to the body, in fact, they play a dual role as both toxic and beneficial compounds. The human body has the natural antioxidant defense mechanism to counteract the free rad...

Mechanisms of Physical Activity – How does it work?

When someone is inactive the energy and oxygen accumulate to dangerous levels instead of being burned off. This creates an excess of free radicals. If one is consuming too many calories this adds more energy to the mitochondrion and contributes to the free radicals. Anti-oxidants generated within the mitochondrion can neutralise the free radicals and help prevent damage. Physical activity helps...

Free Radicals, Antioxidants in Disease and Health

Free radicals and oxidants play a dual role as both toxic and beneficial compounds, since they can be either harmful or helpful to the body. They are produced either from normal cell metabolisms in situ or from external sources (pollution, cigarette smoke, radiation, medication). When an overload of free radicals cannot gradually be destroyed, their accumulation in the body generates a phenomen...

Free radicals, oxidative stress and importance of antioxidants in human health

Received 13 March 2011 Revised 04 May 2011 Accepted 14 June 2011 Early online 01 July 2011 Print 31 July 2011 Reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a collective term used for oxygen containing free radicals, depending on their reactivity and oxidizing ability. ROS participate in a variety of chemical reactions with biomolecules leading to a pathological condition known as oxidative stress. Antioxida...

Antioxidants: New-generation therapeutic base for treatment of polygenic disorders

Hyperphysiological burden of free radicals causes imbalance in homeostatic phenomena between oxidants and antioxidants in the body. This imbalance leads to oxidative stress that is being suggested as the root cause of aging and various human diseases like atherosclerosis, stroke, diabetes, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinsonism. Therefore, in modern W...

The role of alcohol in the oxidant antioxidant balance in heart.

The myocardium, like other tissues, has enzyme and non-enzyme systems to neutralize free radicals. The enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase as well as the non-enzyme antioxidants vitamin E and ascorbic acid are the main antioxidants. Oxidants are produced by the mitochondria under normal conditions and by other sources under pathologic cond...
